What we’re doing to be more sustainable

No more bubble mailers? Paper boxes to replace plastic wrap? 100% recyclable mailers? We weren’t going to make this a new year, new me post, but… We’re super excited to share with you the exciting changes we’ve made to be a more sustainable and ethical skin care brand for our girl, planet earth. We know that our customers appreciate how sustainable our ingredients are, and we’re putting our money where our mouth is by having packaging that reflects our formulas. Here are some of the things we’re proud to have said goodbye to this year: 

Goodbye to: Plastic bubble mailers  

• This shipping package is non-recyclable and non-biodegradable — two qualities that create problems for waste management and climate health. Plastic shipping envelopes are made with polyethylene material that can cause severe ecological damage once discarded into the landfill. 

Our solution: 100% recyclable cardboard boxes (they’re even cute + branded) 

• We chose branded paper boxes to replace padded mailers. Carboard is one of the materials with the least environmental impact. Its manufacture means a reduction of up to 60% in CO2 and oil emissions compared to other materials. These boxes are so pretty, you’ll want to use them over and over again before confidently placing them in your recycling box. 

Goodbye to: Bubble Wrapped serums for glass bottles 

• Sadly, one of the most widely used forms of protective shipping, bubble wrap is a $3.5 billion dollar industry contributing to an increased carbon foot print. Because plastic polymer film breaks down slowly, bubble wrap causes a significant environmental problem by taking up space within landfills worldwide. 

Our solution: 100% recyclable serum boxes  

• We’ve replaced bubble wrapped glass bottles with new serum boxes made entirely of cardboard. These boxes securely hold in place your glass bottle without compromising shipping safety. We’ve also chosen to have all of our new sustainable packaging shipped by freight, instead of air. Airplanes pollute at an average rate of 20-30x more than ships, while ships are the most environmentally-friendly transport vessels.

See you later to: Unsustainable shipping practices 

• Single use and virgin plastics play a huge role in environmental damage, especially in poor shipping methods. The problem is that virgin plastic—new resin created from natural gas or oil—is so cheap to make that it undermines the economics of the  recycling market. It is simply less expensive to manufacture new plastic than to collect, sort, and process disposable plastic into new feedstock. We still found a more sustainable option. 

Our solution: 100% recyclable mailers 

• We’re proud to be partnering with Grounded Packaging: a company focussed on sustainable packaging solutions. Grounded's recycled poly mailers are made from 100% recycled content. Using a combination of post-consumer (70%) & post-industrial  recycled (30%) LDPE they're also fully recyclable themselves. We’ve also added double adhesive strips for re-use and returns. Grounded adheres to GRS (Global Recycled Standard) which verifies recycled content and tracks it from the source to the final  product. Our new mailers use non-toxic water-based inks to ensure we’re being friendly to our ecosystem.
