The best skincare practices for mature skin
One of the most highly requested skincare conversations we have been asked to cover from our customers is… anti-aging skincare practices! This comes as no surprise, seeing as how important, and effective the right products can be for aging youthfully. As we age, products that may have worked years ago may begin to lose their luster, menopause creates a new set of skin concerns, and our skin produces less oil than it had in our 20’s. Celebrating beauty looks different at every age, and it is important that representation is reflected not only for different skin types, but different ages, too. We’ve developed an expert-backed guide to the best skincare practices for beautiful, maturing skin. You deserve it.
1. Using the right cleansers and face creams for your skin
The right products become crucial as our skin matures, as natural aging processes lead to dryer, more sensitive skin in need of more hydration than before. Ensuring you are starting off your routine with an effective cleanser is one of the most important steps. It is best to avoid high foaming cleansers that claim they are for acne or oily skin as typically, these products contain harsh surfactants (stripping agents) that can further dry out the skin, doing more harm than good. Since your skin begins to produce less oils the older we get, it is vital that we try and keep as much of this natural oil in as possible, while also ensuring clean, bacteria-free skin. To do this, we recommend cream-based cleansers, which focus on gentle surfactants that hydrate while you cleanse. This removes that tight and dry feeling associated with harsh formulas, and ensures the safety of your skin’s microbiome and essential good bacterias. We recommend Truly Cleansing Facial Cleanser, of course!
Face creams will become increasingly important (if they aren’t already) in your routine, as hormonal changes often lead to less available water in the skin at any given time. Water loss is one of the leading factors in loss of elasticity and firmness, leading to sagging skin and premature wrinkles. Applying a rich moisturizer twice daily that is loaded with fatty acids is key in combating signs of aging. A hydrated complexion looks more plump, healthy, and youthful looking, and we recommend Truly Moisturizing Face Cream which is also unscented for sensitive skin!
2. Don’t be afraid of exfoliants
Exfoliation is a must as our skin ages. The outermost layer is a roof of dead skin, and it thickens as we age. Therefore, exfoliation is essential to uncover fresh, bright skin. Exfoliating also aids in the production of collagen and elastin, which allow your skin to bounce back and retain hydration for longer periods of time. Balance is key when it comes to exfoliation, which is why we recommend applying this product no more than twice a week for the best results. Over exfoliating can be too abrasive to the skin, and is not recommended for every use. Our best recommendation is the Truly Exfoliating Facial Scrub for radiant skin.
3. Start using Retinol
We get asked all the time for miracle treatments that can turn back the hands of time. While this doesn’t technically exist, retinoids are the next best thing, and no longer are they only available from your dermatologist. Retinoid derivatives like retinol, which is a high concentration of Vitamin A, are capable of penetrating the lower layer of skin called the dermis, which is where your collagen lives. Retinol is an integral part of skincare as we get older, since our collagen production is responsible for turning over new skin cells, stimulating elasticity and tightness of the skin, and even aids with age spots. We recommend the Truly Ageless 1% Retinol serum, as it contains a base of jojoba oil and squalane for a moisturizing and smoothing application.
