After-Sun Care

If you’re living in BC, we suspect there’s a good chance you’ve been riding out this hot weather in the coldest room of your basement, with the AC on full blast (if you're lucky enough to have AC) and way, WAY too many iced coffees (never enough iced coffees). You might have also be spending the summer at the lake and have suffered a couple casualties, in the form of tan lines and/or lobster red skin perhaps?

We know you slathered on the SPF as best you could, but we also know the sun has been testing us lately. So, for the hopefully rare times that you are faced with a burn so bad you actually contemplate sleeping standing up, we’re here for you, and so is witch hazel.

Let’s talk about your new summer BFF. Witch hazel, or Hamamelis Virginiana — a type of shrub native to North America — is most commonly used for topical relief and pain reduction. The leaves and bark are made into teas and ointments! When it comes to sun burn after care, spritzing this product onto the affected area gives an immediate cooling and soothing sensation while you attempt to get comfy.

But wait, there’s more! Aside from immediate relief, witch hazel, just like any good wine, is rich in tannins. We don’t recommend spritzing your chardonnay onto your sun burns, but you get the idea. Tannins act as an antioxidant against free radicals that cause skin damage from UV rays, thanks to its anti-inflammatory benefits and ability to quickly heal damaged skin. Since healing damaged skin is one of witch hazel's specialties, and a sunburn is a type of skin inflammation, it's ideal for treating this too (despite swelling not being obvious).

Treating sunburns with witch hazel will lessen healing time and possibly prevent the infamous skin peeling and flaking! If you needed any more reasons to love it, we’ve also combined this standalone product with rose water for the ultimate skin rejuvenation!

Truly Youthful Rose Toner’s first two ingredients are witch hazel and rose water, which when combined together are two of the most effective natural ingredients for soothing, repairing and rehydrating burnt skin! We’ve got your back, and your front, and well just about anywhere else you may have gotten a little more than just bronzed.

So good news, while you might be stuck gingerly pressing your fingers against your skin to gauge your pain tolerance for the next few days, these products are sure to make your sun burn go away faster and give you some much needed relief. We can’t forget to tell you to lather on your highest SPF this summer, hopefully you’ll only have to read this blog entry once.

"I experienced a horrific sunburn that nothing seemed to tame. I decided to give Truly a go and WOW, it took the edge off and eventually was key to healing my burn! 10/10 would recommend!" - Jaclyn P.
